I preserve documents in remote regions of the Dominican Republic. From Samaná to Puerto Plata to Dajabón. To recover Black Dominicanas’ thinking, my practices go beyond the national archive.

Shadow Scholars: A Digital Project.

Reading Black women’s thought in the Caribbean requires we sit in the fragmentary archive of Transatlantic Slavery. This digital collection brings together sources across the Dominican Republic, Spain, and the United States to trace the intellectualism of Black women who were rarely literate yet authored enduring legacies in the Atlantic world.

Black Dominican Studies Mentoring.

The intersection of Black Studies and Dominican Studies offers us new tools for studying Hispaniola. As a Black Studies scholar, I encourage my students to develop their Dominican Studies projects through grounded engagements with Black Studies scholarship and methodologies.

  • Annual Harvest Celebration

    October 27, 2024
    Location: Samaná, Dominica Republic

    The Annual Harvest celebration has been held since the arrival of the African American emigrants in Samana in 1824. The Harvest Celebration occurs in October at the local AME churches and is an event to welcome the new crop season and celebrate the end of the hurricane season.

  • Jornada de Visibilización del Cimarronaje (Maroon Awareness Tour)

    Wednesday, October 30th
    Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EST
    Location: La Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo

    The University of Santo Domingo and Afro-Dominican activist groups like Afros RD and Reconodi.do organize the Jornada de Visibilización del Cimarronaje, or a “Maroon Awareness Tour” –  referring to escaped African slaves who established free communities in secluded areas throughout the Caribbean. The two-day event, held each October, the tour stops at historical locations across Santo Domingo, revealing the contribution of Africans and their descendants Dominican history.

  • We Choose Freedom: African American Migrations to Hispaniola Symposium

    Wednesday, November 13th
    Time: 8:30 AM- 5:00 PM
    Location: The University of Texas at Austin

    The symposium will discuss scholarly trends in African American history, anthropology, and Black and Latino Studies. Animated by the histories and legacies of Black immigration to Hispaniola, the symposium program traces the ‘search for freedom’ and its afterlives across histories, cultural analyses, artistic expressions, material preservation initiatives, ecological changes, and communities.

  • Grounded Engagements in American Studies

    Friday, November 15th
    Time: 10:00 AM EST
    Location: Baltimore, Maryland

    This session convenes emerging scholars to discuss Black Feminist approaches in Dominican Studies. Expanding on Afro-Latinx Studies directives that call on us to affirm “negro in its transnational translation” as Black, this conversation asks how panelists use Black Feminist methods and theories in their respective Dominican diasporan projects.
