Black Dominican Studies Mentorship
As a scholar-activist who builds Black archives in the Dominican Republic, I am committed to teaching that empowers and equips students to embrace their roles as interlocutors in the classroom and in their communities. My seven years of experience working to institutionally uplift the field of Dominican Studies in the CUNY system informs how I guide and support student’s intellectual and professional growth. Serving as a Research Assistant and then a Research Associate at the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI), the only U.S. institute dedicated to scholarly research on Dominican people, molded my practice of incorporating community and African diasporic epistemologies into curriculum. During my tenure, I administered a workshop series, “How to Apply to Graduate School and Getting Paid to Earn a Ph.D.,” where I guided undergraduates and master’s students on the confusing doctoral school application process. Demystifying academic processes for students is a cornerstone of my teaching approach.
